Strong case to help worse off homebuyers, says Drakeford

There is no part of Wales where a first time buyer cannot buy a first home for £180,000, Finance Secretary Mark Drakeford has said.

He told BBC Wales why he has decided not to continue with a waiver on stamp duty for first-time buyers purchasing homes worth up to £300,000, announced by the chancellor last month.

Instead, no one will pay the new Welsh version of the tax for homes worth up to £180,000 when it comes into force from April next year.

Mr Drakeford said: "I don't think there's a strong taxpayer case for help being concentrated on those people who are already at the greatest advantage in the market".
