Hal Robson-Kanu not included in Wales squad for Mexico friendly

Hal Robson-Kanu has been left out of Wales' squad for their friendly against Mexico in the United States on 29 May.

There is also no place for Fulham wing George Williams and Sunderland defender Adam Matthews, as manager Ryan Giggs trims his squad from 32 to 23 players.

Wales were already without Joe Allen, plus Gareth Bale and Ben Woodburn.

Allen is injured, while Woodburn misses out as Liverpool face Bale's Real Madrid in the Champions League final in Kiev three days before Wales play.

Wales will also be without Aston Villa pair James Chester and Neil Taylor as they prepare for the Championship play-off final against Fulham.

But senior midfielders Aaron Ramsey and Joe Ledley return to the squad for the game in Pasadena, California.

Manchester City's 18-year-old Matthew Smith and Leicester City's fellow uncapped midfielder George Thomas, 21, are given a chance to impress at senior level.

Kanu scored a memorable Euro 2016 goal in the 3-1 quarter-final win over Belgium but the 28-year-old, who has won 44 caps, is surplus to requirements in the reduced squad.

Luke Pilling, Regan Poole, Joe Rodon, Cameron Coxe, Dan James and Marley Watkins are the other players to miss out.

However, Pilling, Coxe, Rodon, Poole and James are all earmarked for the Wales Under-21 side that will play Georgia in two friendlies on 3 and 6 June.

Giggs said he spoke to Bale and Woodburn about the Mexico game clashing with their Champions League final at the China Cup in March.

"I want the best players, obviously, to be with us. But I also want players to experience Champions League finals," said the manager.

"Obviously Gareth's done it before - but of course you want to see your players do well.

"On the downside, you won't be able to perhaps use them during the trip so it's a difficult one for me as a manager, but then it also gives an opportunity for other players."

Meanwhile, striker Simon Church has been forced to retire because of a hip injury.
