Lambeth Heritage Festival: Loughborough Road’s shops, pubs and people, Sept 2019

Lambeth’s Heritage Festival is on throughout September with over 60 events across the borough. LEAF Tenants and Residents Association neighbours will be part of the festival, sharing what they’ve learnt from delving into archives and talking to friends, neighbours, past and present, and family about their memories of Loughborough Road.

The LEAF TRA Loughborough Road history project events during Lambeth Heritage Festival month are:

Three exhibitions

  • From 5-22 September visit the San Mei Gallery for an exhibition on the life and works of Nellie Roberts, orchid artist extraordinaire, the first and longest-serving orchid artist at the RHS, who lived and worked in Loughborough Road throughout her career
  • Visit the Lambeth Archives at Minet Library during September, for an exhibition exploring the history of Loughborough Road’s shops, pubs and people
  • Look out for the posters outside shops and pubs on Loughborough Road telling the stories of each property. The Jamm (formerly the White Horse) and Loughborough Hotel will feature history posters, along with a number of the shops near the fiveways junction.

Leach’s ‘oil and colourman shop’ 67 Loughborough Road – George Leach who ran the shop on the left. To the right ‘They boy’ who ran up and down steps getting items for customers. Looks far from a boy!  Leach’s family photo collection. Year unknown but looks like 1920s or 30s as seems Randall and Sons ironmongers are at 65, which Leach’s took over in 1933 to become the double Leach’s hardware and oil shop.
