Women's Basketball Returns Home to Host Campbell

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina women's basketball returns to the friendly confines of the Ramsey Center at 7 p.m. Thursday hosting Big South Conference member Campbell. 

 

AN INSIDE LOOK AT THE CATAMOUNTS:

  • Western Carolina and Campbell play for the 21st time on Thursday. The Catamounts hold a slight edge in the series 11-9 but the Camels have won the last four meetings. In the contest, last season, Nov. 9, 2018, Campbell came away from Cullowhee with a 63-37 victory. Western Carolina is 6-4 at home against Campbell with the last home victory over the Camels coming on Nov. 24, 2014, with WCU winning 67-57.
  • The game against Campbell is the second of three-straight teams WCU will be playing from the Big South with the Catamounts playing a total of six teams for the conference this season. The Catamounts faced USC Upstate on Tuesday, will entertain UNC Asheville for WCU's annual Education Day game on Monday, travel to Gardner-Webb on Nov. 27, host Charleston Southern Dec. 4 and close out the Big South Conference swing hosting Winthrop Dec. 21.
  • Thursday's game against Campbell ends a brutal swing of five games in 10 days.
  • Freshman Andrea Martin Ruiz notched her 10th point, marking the first double-figure scoring performance of her young Catamount career, courtesy of a cross-court pass from her sister senior Judith Martin Ruiz late in the second quarter at USC Upstate. She ended the game with a career-high 13 points. 
  • After failing to score in double figures against Elon Saturday, Nov. 9, Jewel Smalls got back to her double-figure scoring ways with 17 points against USC Upstate on Tuesday.
  • Smalls also ripped down 10 rebounds against USC Upstate marking her third double-double in the first four games of the season.

 

 

AN INSIDE LOOK CAMPBELL:

  • Campbell is coming off a five-day break having last played Nov. 8 falling at Old Dominion 59-44.
  • The Camels are led by Kianna Speight averaging 10.5 points per game.
  • Campbell won its home opener against St. Andrews 122-56 breaking the Camels single-game scoring record. Campbell's 66-point margin of victory marked the third-largest at home in program history and the largest ever on opening night.
