CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Sophomore guard Jewel Smalls scored her fourth double-double of the season, 11 points and 13 rebounds, as Western Carolina women's basketball fell to visiting Campbell 61-40 Thursday in the Ramsey Center. 

Turning Point:

Campbell outscored Western Carolina 21-7 in the third quarter as the Catamounts went on to score a total of 12 points in the second half.

Individual Leaders

  • Smalls led the Catamounts with 11 points and also topped the team with her 13 rebounds. 
  • Junior Lauren LaPlant just missed scoring in double figures with nine points – all from three-point range. 
  • Andrea Martin Ruiz dished out four assists and had a pair of steals.
  • Campbell's Kianna Speight led all scorers with 14 points. 

 

Inside the Box Score

  • Western Carolina outscored Campbell in the second quarter 18-16. 
  • The Catamounts scored only seven points in the third quarter. After being down by just four at the half, 32-28, Campbell came out in the third quarter and went on a 14-0 run in an eight-minute span to put the game out of reach. 
  • Both teams looked for the long ball as Western Carolina and Campbell both hit seven three-pointers in the game. The Catamounts hit six of its seven three-pointers in the first half. 
  • Campbell shot a nice clip shooting 41.3 percent from the field while Western Carolina was half that mark shooting 28.3 percent.
  • The Camels won the rebounding battle ripping down 44 rebounds while the Catamounts pounded the glass for 33 with just three offensive boards. 
  • Western Carolina held Campbell to single-digit scoring, eight points, in the fourth quarter after the Camels scored in double figures in the first three-quarters of the contest.

  • Smalls recorded the fourth double-double in the first five games of the season. 
  • Western Carolina's third-quarter woes continue as the Catamounts are being outscored 82-35.
  • The Catamounts scored under 50 points for the second time this season. 
  • Smalls and LaPlant lead the team with each having hit 10 three-pointers on the season. 
  • The game against Campbell ended a brutal stretch of five games in 10 days. 
  • Western Carolina's game against Campbell was WCU's second straight contest against a team for the Big South. The Catamounts will make it three in a row when they host UNC Asheville on Monday.
