RICHMOND, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- The Virginia Department of Health reports there have been 44,069 confirmed and 2,170 probable cases of COVID-19 along with 1,300 confirmed and 107 probable deaths from the virus as of June 2.

On May 1, the VDH reported there were 16,901 total cases of COVID-19 and 44,607 total cases by May 31.

The first positive case of COVID-19 in Virginia was confirmed on March 7. The VDH reported there were 1,484 positive cases on April 1.

Governor Ralph Northam announced at a press conference in April that elective surgeries and dental work would resume on May 1, after being banned due to the outbreak and to save more personal protective equipment.

Northam spoke more on the details of Phase One of reopening Virginia's economy at a press conference on May 8. He then spoke about challenges localities to slow the spread of COVID-19.

On May 13, Northam confirmed that Phase One would start in most localities, except in certain Northern Virginia localities. On May 14, the delay was expanded to include Richmond and Accomack County.

On May 18, Northam announced that Virginia Beach and First State Landing Park would reopen during Memorial Day weekend for recreational activities such as swimming and sunbathing.

On May 28, Northam announced starting Friday, all localities will be in Phase One, facial coverings must be worn in public spaces and more public beaches will be open with social distancing being practiced. Northam spoke about Virginia possibly entering Phase Two on June 5.
