Church hosts Harpists for Peace program

A Harpists for Peace program titled "Nocturne" will take place at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, at Crestview United Methodist Church, 2245 S.W. Eveningside Drive.

The program will celebrate International Day of Peace and World Peace.

Harpists will include Jim Mosher, of Topeka, and others from Lawrence, Kansas City, Wichita and Lindsborg.

In other religion news:

• The Pastor and Wife Anniversary Committee of True Vine Missionary Baptist Church will sponsor a bake sale beginning at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, at the church, 307 S.E. Tefft.

• Shawnee Heights United Methodist Church, 6020 S.E. 44th, will have its annual chicken-and-noodles dinner from 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22. The cost is $8 for adults and $6 for children 12 and under. A bake sale will be held in conjunction with the dinner.

• The United Methodist men's group at Highland Park United Methodist Church, 2914 S.E. Michigan Ave., will have its 61st annual barbecue from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, at the church. The cost for the pulled pork dinner is $7.50 for adults and $5 for children 12 and younger. A car show will be held on the front lawn of the church.

• Big Springs United Methodist Church, 96 US-40 highway in Big Springs, will have a brunch at 10:15 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 23, in honor of the 102nd birthday of Kathleen Schneider. The brunch will follow the 9 a.m. worship service. Schneider was a member of the church when the present building was dedicated in 1932.

• All five Topeka congregations of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will have the theme "I am a Child of God" for their annual primary children's sacrament meeting programs. Children ages 3 to 11 years of the Kaw Valley Ward will present their program at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 23, at the LDS Topeka Stake Center, 2401 S.W. Kingsrow Road. The Colly Creek Ward and Topeka Spanish Branch will have a combined program at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 30, in the LDS meetinghouse, 3611 S.W. Jewell. Both the Lake Shawnee Ward, which meets at the LDS meetinghouse, and the Sherwood Ward, which meets at the Topeka Stake Center, will have programs at 9 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 28.

• St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church, 2222 S.E. Madison, will celebrate its 70th anniversary with several special services this month. Services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 23, with special guests from New Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church; at 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, with a choir musical fundraiser for the church's anniversary; and at 11 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 30, with special guests from St. Paul Baptist Church in Taft, Okla.

• Randel Ministries Inc., in partnership with Harvesters and Family of God Church, will sponsor a mobile food distribution starting at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25, at the church, 1231 N.W. Eugene.

• Janet Lahr Lewis, a recently retired commissioned missionary with the General Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church, will speak on "Israel and Palestine: What We Should Know and Why We Should Care," at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, at Highland Park United Methodist Church, 2914 S.E. Michigan Ave.

• Temple Beth Sholom, 4200 S.W. Munson, will present a program titled “Behind the Baton ... Leonard Bernstein” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27. The program will feature Kyle Wiley Pickett, music director and conductor of the Topeka Symphony Orchestra. This year marks the 100th anniversary of Bernstein's birth. Pickett will give a talk about Bernstein as a conductor, including anecdotes from his teacher, who played with Bernstein in the New York Philharmonic.

• The 10th Annual Community Hoe-Down will take place from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, at Kansas Avenue United Methodist Church, 1029 N. Kansas Ave. Entertainment will include music from featuring Heartstrings and Washburn University's Dancing Blues Infinity Dancers. The event will feature door prizes, kid's games and free food, including hot dogs, chips, popcorn, soda and cookies. Those attending are invited to bring lawn chairs.

• Elmont United Methodist Church, 6635 N.W. Church Lane, will celebrate its 100th anniversary with special services on Sunday, Sept. 30. A drop-in time with coffee and doughnuts will take place from 8:30 to 9:20 a.m., followed by a worship service at 9:30 a.m. and a potluck luncheon with the sharing of memories at 11 a.m. Those planning to attend the luncheon are asked to bring a dish to share. Dessert will be provided.

• Pianist Daniel Hsu will be in concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 30, at Grace Episcopal Cathedral, 701 S.W. 8th, as part of the cathedral's Great Spaces Music & Arts Series. Tickets are $10 for general admission and $5 for students. Children 12 and younger will be admitted free.

• Annunciation Catholic Church will have a picnic featuring a roast beef dinner along with children's games, quilt raffle, silent auction, train rides, bingo, a cake walk and church poker from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 30, at the Cigna Center, 402 N. Maple in Frankfort. The meal cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children 10 and under. Takeout meals and delivery in Frankfort will be available. • Award-winning Christian country gospel singer Mary James will be in concert at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3, at Family of God Church, 1231 N.W. Eugene.

• Sts. Peter and Paul Antiochian Orthodox Church, 2516 S.W. Huntoon, will have its annual Greek food festival from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct . 6. Dinners cost $16 and desserts and baklava will range from $1 to $4.

• Berryton United Methodist Church, 7010 S.E. Berryton Road, will have its annual fall soup supper and bake sale from 4 to 7 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 6. The menu will include homemade chili and vegetable soup; relish tray, crackers and cornbread; cookies; and a drink. Freewill donations will be accepted, and carry-outs will be available by 3:30 p.m.

• Lowman United Methodist Church, 4101 S.W. 15th, will have its Fall Festival from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6.

• Evangelist Chad MacDonald will be the speaker at the Citywide Fall Camp Meeting from Sunday, Oct. 7, to Friday, Oct. 12, at several Topeka churches. • St. Luke's Lutheran Church, 129 Railroad St. in Wheaton, will have its annual church supper and bazaar from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 7. The meal will include fried chicken, ham, mashed potatoes, gravy, vegetables, assorted salads, homemade breads and dessert. The cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 5 to 12.

• The women's group of Susanna Wesley United Methodist Church is participating in a reading program through the summer and fall. The next book group members will read is "Bus to Corinth," by Ladine Housholder. The discussion of this book will be at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 8, in Room 206 of Manchester Lodge at Aldersgate Village, 7220 S.W. Asbury Drive. • Highland Park United Methodist Church, 2914 S.E. Michigan Ave., will have a fall festival from 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13.

• Christ the King Catholic Church, 5973 S.W. 25th, will have its annual "Rome Sweet Rome" event on Saturday, Oct. 13. The event will include: 3 p.m. — Adoration with Wichita Adore Ministries; 4:30 p.m. — outdoor Mass; 5:45 p.m. — Italian dinner featuring LaRocca’s lasagna, salad, green beans, roll and dessert, with wine and beer also being sold.

Additionally, more than 10 food trucks will be open as of 5:45 p.m. Also featured will be a beer and wine garden; games and inflatables for children; a special area for teens; a sweepstakes with tickets for two to Italy; and a raffle for prizes.

At 7 p.m., live music will be provided by Chance Encounter. Bingo will be offered at 7:30 p.m. and a fireworks spectacular will take place at 9 p.m.

• Faith Temple Church, 1162 S.W. Lincoln, will have a banquet celebrating the 70th birthday of Sandra West-Lassiter, founder of the International Academy Bright Stars, at 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13.
