Considering the atrocious weather over the weekend a surprising number of East Kilbride Rugby Club’s Junior sides managed to get some game time – albeit in, at times, horrid conditions.

The Under-16s took the field for the first time since November with a first-round League Cup tie against Wigtownshire.

Given that EK scored directly from the kick-off through Lewis Brown and again from the resulting restart with Nathan McGowan the sharpest to react, the Stranraer side must have wondered why they bothered with their near three-hour trip.

The game continued in this one-sided vein, with EK passing 60 by half-time. Wigtownshire were offered the option of mixing up the sides for the second period but opted to carry on as they were but must still have been glad when the debutant 16-year-old referee put them out of their misery early.

Brown finished with five tries, his midfield partner Ewan Ross picking up two, as did Matthew Bell, while there were singles for Callum O’Neil, Euan Ferrie, Matthew Brown, Evan Martin and Jamie Love, and Fraser Jackson converted 13 from 15.

Despite losing all three of their games on Sunday the Primary 7 side showed how far they have come since the start of the season.

Without six first-choice players EK opened against an Ayr ‘A’ unit that had run in 10 unanswered tries when the teams met back in August.

Sunday was a different affair, with EK going down only 1-0, as the outstanding midfield defence of Keir Eadie and Ri Murphy negated the impact of Ayr’s pacy wide men.

Game two was against Ayr ‘B’. With Dylan Gardiner disrupting everything Ayr sought to put in place EK were unlucky to go down 2-1, with Gardiner getting the EK score while a legitimate effort from debut boy Mark Neilson was disallowed.

An attritional afternoon saw East Kilbride down to the bare bones for their final encounter with Cumnock and despite scores from Gardiner and Callum McKinnon EK lost out.

Short on recent match practice the P6 side turned in a fine shift.

East Kilbride opened with a rare victory over Ayr. Callum Russell and Dylan Campbell both got over the line but were unable to ground the ball due to the resolute Ayr defence. Rory Andrews also found two tries to help EK to victory.

In the next game, the outstanding defence of Sam Rooney kept Cumnock from opening up but they eventually took a 2-0 lead and, despite Michael White getting one back, EK went down 2-1.

The P5s took a healthy squad of 13 to Ayr despite a few absentees, to show their increasing strength in depth. EK totally dominated the first half of their opener against Cumnock but were unable to maintain pressure for the full game and lost narrowly.

The second game, against Ayr, was all EK – with Lewis Kerr in particular catching the eye with ball in hand while Awais Aziz was a shuddering defensive presence.

●The senior side’s cup clash with Carrick was postponed and will be rescheduled for a later date.

This Saturday EK play their final league game when they travel to champions Newton Stewart. Kick-off is 3pm.
