Stewartry Sharks welcomed Annan, Dumfries, Newton Stewart and Wigtownshire to Greenlaw on Sunday.

As this was the first games of the season for Sharks all players, coaches, parents and supporters gathered at the front of the clubhouse to observe a minute silence in memory of Dr Jim Duck, a founding member of Stewartry Sharks.

Micros

With the micros now starting their second season since they formed many knew what to expect on tournament days but for some new recruits it was all new and perhaps a little daunting.

The team gelled well and soon got into the way of play under the watchful eye of coach John Simpson.

They played simple tag rugby and had lots of fun against Annan, Dumfries and Wigtownshire. Well done to all the micros.

P4/5

The P4/5 team’s first game was against Wigtownshire, which they won by eight tries to one.

Next up were Dumfries Black and in a much tighter game the teams drew with five tries each. Game three saw the Stewartry draw again, this time against Dumfries White.

The P4/5s penultimate game was against Newton Stewart and in another tight match they won through by five tries to four. Last up were Annan and yet again the young Stewartry team showed great character by winning this by the odd try in 11.

Well done to the team on remaining unbeaten during their first competitive outing of the season and credit to the P4s as this was their first taste of playing full contact. Special mention to Zak Rawlings who was pretty much unplayable all day and Ryan Hind who made some tremendous tackles throughout the tournament as well as scoring numerous tries.

P6/7

The P6/7 team got their season off to a great start with wins against Wigtownshire, Dumfries White, Newton Stewart and Annan and a draw with Dumfries Black.

Tackles, passing and support play were very good however the team needs to work on rucks which will come with more game time. Ben, Ethan and Euan in their first Sharks game did not disappoint their coaches with their eagerness to get involved. Thank you to referees and parents mucking in with food and much more who without there would no games for these kids.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery to Matthew Hind who took a bad tackle against Dumfries and required a visit to A&E.
