Music provided for Summer Sundays at The Village

CARTERVILLE - The Harrison Bruce Historical Village on the campus of John A. Logan College continues its "Summer Sunday" outings with tours at the Village and a special program entitled, "The Square Grand of Harrison House - Music Through Time."

The event is set for 2-4 p.m. this Sunday, Aug. 25 on the college campus.

Plan a tour of The Village and a visit featuring renowned pianist Henry Nicolaides as he tells the story of the restoration of the Chickering Square Grand Piano in The Harrison House and regales us with his three-year project to restore the piano, the work involved and the history of Chickerings, and play a short concert on the piano.

The Chickering was transported to Southern Illinois over land and then by barge on the Ohio River and by wagon to the Herrin area. The piano dates to l871 and was made in Boston. Julia Harrison Bruce was able to place the Chickering to the front parlor of The Harrison House in l976. The piano came home to The Village and was dedicated along with The Village in April, 2012.

The wood finish work on The Chickering was done by Roberto Franco of Makanda. The Chickering is one of the many treasures to be found in The Harrison Bruce Village that welcomes families, Purdy School students, art and architecture research students and history buffs.

The Village Heritage Gardens are in full bloom. There are many exciting photo opportunities for families and individuals. Refreshments in the Mees Centre are provided by The Bank of Herrin. The Mees Centre is air-conditioned. All Sunday Summer tours and programs are free.
