Dover shifting traffic for Sunday's Seacoast Cancer 5K

DOVER —  On Sunday, Sept. 23, Wentworth-Douglass Hospital will hold the fourth annual Seacoast Cancer 5K to benefit the Seacoast Cancer Center. Up to 3,000 participants are expected. The event begins at 9 a.m. with a start and finish at WDH. Motorists should expect — and give way to — runners or walkers wearing numbered race bibs on any Dover roadways between 9 and 10 a.m., said a city spokesman.

There are several major street closures during this event, including:

Central Avenue southbound traffic will be detoured to Mount Vernon Street between Abbott and Ash streets, between 8:45 and 10 a.m.

Oak Street will be closed in both directions between Portland Avenue and Central Avenue, including at the Broadway and Rollins Road intersection, between 9 and 10 a.m.

Broadway will be closed to all traffic from Central Avenue to Oak Street between 8:45 and 10 a.m.

Central Avenue will be closed to northbound traffic at Oak Street briefly to accommodate the 9 a.m. race start.

Lane shifts and lane closures will be in effect on Central Avenue near Chapel Street.

Motorists should expect significant delays on Oak Street, Broadway, Chapel Street and Saint John Street between 9 and 10 a.m.

Residents of the following streets will not be able to arrive or depart by car during the race:, and should plan to park outside the affected race route: Oak Street, Broadway, Chapel Street, Saint John Street, Oak Terrace, High Ridge Drive, Jefferson Drive, Brick Road, Rose Street, Winter Street, Durrell Street.

Event parking will be available in the WDH garage and at the medical office parks off Old Rollinsford Road. Dover and Rollinsford police officers and event volunteers will be posted along the course to help manage traffic.

Wentworth-Douglass Hospital will remain open for emergency patients during the event.
