Archdiocese of Atlanta sends out warning about email phishing scam

The Archdiocese of Atlanta is warning people about an email phishing scam aimed at trying to get hundreds of dollars from people through its church email newsletter list.

FOX 5 learned the breach happened on Aug. 13.

Church leaders said hackers gained access to more than 80,000 of its volunteers, donors, and others through its account with an online marketing company, Constant Contact. Recipients were sent an email with a message requesting $220 that would go to a site linked to a bank account in South Africa.

Officials insist it was all bogus.
