Gadsden City rally comes up short

Titans fall to 0-5 with 12-7 loss to Bob Jones

MADISON — Bob Jones' goal-line stand with six seconds left to play kept Gadsden City searching for its first win of the season, as the Patriots won 12-7 in Class 7A, Region 4 play Friday.

The Titans were faced with fourth-and-goal at the Patriot 3-yard line but could not punch it in the end zone.

Bob Jones, which picked up its first region win of the season, missed two short field goals and an extra point while holding Gadsden City's offense scoreless.

The Titans (0-5, 0-3) led 7-0 at halftime after Terrence Peeples’ 95-yard fumble return.

Bob Jones quarterback Caden Rose completed 18-of-25 passes for 155 yards and two touchdowns. His scoring tosses to John Riley covered 21 and 7 yards.

Gadsden City’s Jamontez Woods had 19 carries for 65 yards.

The Titans take next week off before returning to region action Oct. 5 against James Clemens.

Hokes Bluff 28, Anniston 18

ANNISTON — Second-ranked Hokes Bluff built a 21-3 halftime lead Friday and cruised to a 28-18 triumph over Anniston in Class 4A, Region 6 football.

Darrian Meads rushed for 143 yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries, and Ashton Gulledge completed 6-of-9 passes for 94 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 38 yards and a score on 11 carries.

Kevin Escarino kicked a 27-yard field goal with 8:20 left in the first quarter to put Anniston up 3-0. However, Gulledge ran 2 yards for a touchdown with 4:19 left in the quarter, Meads scored from the 1 with 7:58 left in the half and Gulledge passed to Hunter Burke for 8 yards and a touchdown with 3:11 left.

Meads ran 22 yards for the Eagles’ final touchdown with 7:23 remaining in the third quarter. Ethan Whitcomb kicked all four extra points. Anniston got a couple of second-half scores to make the final score.

Carson Eubanks had 10 solo tackles (one for a loss), a sack and an interception to pace Hokes Bluff’s defense.

Hokes Bluff is 4-0 overall, 3-0 in the region and hosts arch-rival Glencoe next week in non-region play.

Sardis 43, Douglas 7

SARDIS CITY — Sardis bounced back from two region losses with a big win against Class 5A, Region 6 foe Douglas on Friday night.

The Lions (2-2, 1-2 Region 6) led 43-0 at halftime.

Trent Presley found Jacob Hopper for a 47-yard touchdown. Jonathan Ray intercepted a pass and returned it 37 yards for a score. Mason Golden scored on an 8-yard end-around. Luke Morris had a 2-yard touchdown set up by a covered fumble by Presley, who also ran in the two-point conversion. Justin Fuller and Johnny Corona each had rushing scores.

Douglas (0-4, 0-3 Region 6) scored on a 16-yard run by Kevin James.

Sardis hosts Geraldine on Friday in non-region action. Douglas hosts Southside in region action.

Boaz 35, Pisgah 14

BOAZ — Boaz jumped out to a 35-0 halftime lead Friday and cruised to a 35-14 homecoming victory over Pisgah at Dr. L.F. Corley, Jr. Stadium.

Boaz improved to 5-0 for the first time since 2012. Pisgah suffered its first loss after three wins.

The Pirates’ offense scored three touchdowns, and their defense and special teams accounted for one each. Senior Christian Collins rushed for 168 yards and three touchdowns on seven carries.

Taylor Smith returned the opening kickoff 85 yards for a Boaz touchdown. Gerardo Baeza kicked all five PATs for the Pirates.

Collins scored his touchdowns on the Pirates next three possessions, on runs of 2, 1 and 84 yards.

The Pirates’ final touchdown of the first half came after Alex Tarvin scooped up John Barrett’s fumble and returned it 85 yards.

Pisgah added two fourth-quarter touchdowns.

Boaz hosts arch-rival Albertville on Friday.

Cullman 21, Albertville 0

ALBERTVILLE — Missed opportunities haunted the Albertville Aggies on Friday night, as Cullman came away with a 21-0 triumph in a non-region football game on McCord Field at Aggie Stadium.

Jayden Sullins starred for the Bearcats (3-2), scoring all three touchdowns, including two in the fourth quarter. Jacob Dendy led Albertville’s attack with 158 yards rushing. Dawson Amos ran for 92 yards.

Albertville slipped to 2-2 on the season heading into next week’s Backyard Brawl against unbeaten Boaz.

Ranburne 35, Cleveland 28 (OT)

CLEVELAND — Cleveland fell in overtime against 2A, Region 6 foe Ranburne on Friday night.

The Panthers (2-2, 1-2 Region 6) scored 14 points in the fourth quarter to force the extra period. Both scores were touchdown passes from Andrew Green. Parker Gilliland caught one while Sam Aycock won the other.

Ranburne (4-0, 3-0) totaled 440 yards of offense while Cleveland had 396 yards.

Cleveland hosts J.B. Pennington on Friday.

Fyffe 55, Asbury 0

FYFFE — Top-ranked Fyffe sailed to a 55-0 victory over Asbury in Class 2A, Region 8 football Friday.

Quarterback Zach Pyron tossed a 70-yard touchdown pass to Payton Stoner 19 seconds into the first quarter for the first of Fyffe’s five touchdowns in the period.

The others came on a 22-yard run by Pyron, a 35-yard run by Payton Anderson, a 20-yard run from Jake Stone and a 6-yard run by Cage Cochran.

Cochran scored from the 8 and Ike Rowell from the 15 in the second quarter as the Red Devils built a 48-0 halftime lead.

Kyle Dukes ran 3 yards for Fyffe’s final touchdown midway through the fourth quarter.

Fyffe has won 32 consecutive regular-season games dating back to 2015.

The Red Devils, 4-0 overall and 3-0 in the region, visit 3A Plainview next week.

Susan Moore 56, Brindlee Mtn. 0

SUSAN MOORE — Susan Moore had little trouble against Brindlee Mountain in 3A, Region 7 play on Friday night.

The Bulldogs (5-0, 3-0 Region 7) led 49-0 at the half. Susan Moore totaled 289 yards of offense and held Brindlee Mountain (0-5, 0-3) to seven yards.

Andrew McEvoy, Anthony Cervantes, Richo Findley and Camden Lackey all had rushing touchdowns. McEvoy had a passing touchdown to Owen Cornelius. Jonathan Villanueva returned a punt for a touchdown and Jesus Aguilar returned a kickoff for a score.

Sand Rock beats Asbury

Sand Rock beat Asbury 25-16, 25-8, 25-2 in high school volleyball Thursday.

August Gilliland paced the Wildcats (16-5) with 14 kills and eight aces. Lanie Henderson had nine kills and two blocks. Colbi Whitlock finished with 14 digs and three aces. Kynleigh Chesnut accounted for seven kills, 10 digs and three aces. Victoria Collun amassed 17 assists, three aces, four kills and six digs. Mattie Brown chipped in three aces. Chloe Clausen contributed 12 assists.

Sand Rock goes to Collinsville on Monday.
