SARDIS CITY — When Sardis is on the football field, odds are Trent Presley is out there somewhere.

That’s not too hard to believe considering the senior has played cornerback and safety on defense and quarterback and wide receiver on offense this season.

Presley made the transition to quarterback before the 2018 campaign, where he shares time with Jay Owens. Presley talked about playing quarterback, as well as Halloween, Baker Mayfield, NBA 2K19 and more in this week’s Timeout with The Times.

GT: Why do you wear No. 6?

TP: I was 21 last year. I got that number my freshman year and I liked it. But this year being quarterback and all, I wanted to be like (former Heisman Trophy winner and Cleveland Browns’ quarterback) Baker Mayfield. That is the reason why.

GT: What is it that you like about Baker Mayfield?

TP: I don’t know, he’s just got that attitude. I like people like that: him and (Basketball Hall of Famer) Allen Iverson. People that are just a little bit cocky. It makes me feel like there is something to it. Something that makes you better.

GT: How has the transition to quarterback been?

TP: The plays? Yeah, that’s a little bit of a struggle. Jay (Owens) has helped me a good bit. He’s playing a good bit of quarterback, too. I feel comfortable playing pretty much anywhere they put me. Being quarterback, I know what the receivers’ routes are so I don’t have to look at the plays as much. I have most of the stuff memorized.

GT: If you had to play another sport, which would you choose?

TP: Basketball. I probably like watching basketball more than I like watching football, but football is my favorite sport. Basketball, there is just something about it.

GT: Since you like watching basketball, give me your 2019 NBA Finals prediction.

TP: It’s going to be the (Golden State) Warriors, for sure. I think they will end up playing Boston and it’s going to be 4-2. That’s going to be the series.

GT: Do you like Halloween?

TP: I mean, yeah, I guess. If I watch scary movies and stuff, I don’t really get scared from that. So it’s not really like something for adrenaline for me. But Halloween is OK.

GT: What are some costumes you wore growing up?

TP: Captain America. Mickey Mouse. I feel like I was The Flash one year. And I was one of the members of KISS, the rock band.

GT: What kind of music do you like to listen to?

TP: I like Lynyrd Skynyrd. I like a lot of rap. I like a little bit of Pink Floyd. I like older stuff. I like newer stuff. I just listen to mostly anything. I don’t like country that much, though.

GT: What do you watch on TV?

TP: When I’m at home, I don’t really watch TV. I watch football games and basketball games and stuff like that. Usually if I’m not watching TV, I’ll be playing (NBA) 2K or Madden.

GT: What made you decide to cut your hair?

TP: Last year I think in the Cherokee County game or North Jackson game, it got pulled. I always thought if I was carrying the ball a lot more this year, a lot more people are going to be pulling my hair. It got annoying having to mess with it throughout the day and stuff.

GT: What’s been your favorite high school sports moment?

TP: Beating Madison Academy (in football 18-17 in 2017), for sure. That was probably the biggest game I’ve ever played in. It was just amazing to come out on top in that game.

GT: You guys were 0-2 heading into the Madison Academy game last season and that win turned things around for the team. Do you think you guys could have a game like that this season where it could be a turning point?

TP: I think this next game (against Alexandria) and Boaz could be huge for us because that means playoffs and not being in the playoffs. It’ll be a really big game this week and then Boaz is our biggest rival.

GT: What is it like getting to play Boaz? Not only are they your biggest rival, but it’s a region game now.

TP: Last year, I didn’t really know many people from Boaz. But then throughout the summer, I actually became friends with a couple of them now so it just means a little bit more to me. It’s probably the game I want to win the most this year.
