HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - If you don’t have a gold star on your Hawaii driver license, you won’t be able to use it to get onto an airplane after Oct. 1, 2020.

That’s the message from the city, which is urging residents to check their drivers licenses now.

Hawaii started transitioning to the gold star REAL ID in January 2018. And so far, about 190,000 Oahu residents have gotten them.

But about 10,000 people a month are expected to seek drivers license renewals in 2020.

And the city wants those people to know that they might want to renew early if they want to use their Hawaii drivers license for air travel or to enter federal facilities.

The REAL IDs bear a gold star in the upper right hand corner.

And they’re compliant with the REAL ID Act, which was part of stricter security measures set in place after the 2001 terrorist attacks.

To renew driver licenses or state IDs with the gold star, book an appointment online.
