SCOTLAND is ready to bask in a summer heatwave with temperatures due to rise higher than Spanish sunspot Marbella.

The mercury is expected to reach 27C in parts of Scotland beating Marbella, which is due to hit just 26C at the start of the week.

The temperature began to rise yesterday, meaning hot conditions for the estimated 5000 women who took part in Race for Life events across the country.

It comes amid water shortage warnings that have been issued with some parts of Scotland having seen just one third of the expected rainfall for June.

Scottish Water has asked customers in Stornoway to use water “wisely” after a prolonged spell of dry weather in the area led to lower than normal loch levels.

In Moray, the dry weather has lead to concerns over water supply levels at Badentinan Water Treatment Works.

Forecasters are expecting highs of 27C in Glasgow tomorrow with the south of the country soaking up the best of the conditions.

The Met Office said Edinburgh will bathe in a 24C heat on Thursday, with Aberdeen and Dundee set for 21C and 20C. Some northern areas, such as parts of Orkney and the Shetland Isles are due to for rain.

Warm air from Africa is pushing towards the UK and temperatures will gradually move up from the low 20s in the coming days.

Met Office forecaster Bonnie Diamond said: “It’s warming up for this week as high pressure drags up warmer air from the continent. Sunny and warm weather lasts until at least the end of next week.”

Other parts of the UK, like southern England, are expected to hit highs of 32C.

Warm temperatures throughout May and June have been enjoyed north of the Border, but experts believe Scotland’s hottest day of the year will be beaten.

Dunstaffnage, Argyll, which reached 27C on May 28, was the highest recorded temperature for this year so far.

Met Office UK forecaster Sophie Yeomans said: “We are going to continue with the dry and sunny weather for most places. Top temperatures are going to be on the rise. We could see temperatures into the low 30s some time this week, possibly from Tuesday, but more likely from Wednesday.”

Ms Yeomans added: “The pollen levels are going to be very high”. right throughout the week”., with grass pollen the main allergen there, so for hay fever sufferers it’s bad news.”
