Blackburn coach comments on former Sunderland flop Jack Rodwell

Jack Rodwell escaped League One Sunderland this summer, joining Blackburn Rovers on a free transfer.

Jack Rodwell will be dreaming of getting his once promising career back on track after that dreadful spell at Sunderland finally came to an end in the summer.

A £10 million signing from Manchester City in 2014, Rodwell soon became an expensive drain on the Black Cats’ resources.

He was one of the club’s highest earners last season but started just once as they were relegated from the Championship and turned down the chance to leave on a free in January.

So a move to Blackburn Rovers represents a real opportunity for the former England international.

Rodwell is yet to make his first-team bow for Rovers but impressed for the U23s in this week’s goalless draw against Arsenal, starting at the heart of a back three.

“Jack’s been terrific. He’s dropped down a couple of times for some training sessions with us and it was important to get minutes under his belt. I was pleased for him that he managed to come through the 90 minutes and looked good I thought,” U23 coach Damien Johnson said in quotes reported by the Lancashire Telegraph.

“He helped us, you never can doubt his quality and his attitude has been top class as well. I’m delighted that he got 90 minutes of football.”

Rodwell was once one of the most exciting young talents in English football and was tipped for big things when he left Everton for then Premier League champions Manchester City in 2012.

The irony will not be lost on Sunderland fans if Rodwell finally manages to fulfil his potential at Ewood Park.
