31st Annual Honolulu Rainbow Film Festival

There will be no fabulous rainbow-carpet gala celebrating HRFF31, but the virtual festival doesn’t come without its perks: This year, every film will be available to stream for free online. It kicks off Friday with the local premiere of Kama‘āina, the story of a young queer girl who escapes abuse and finds refuge at Pu‘uhonua o Wai‘anae. It was awarded Best LGBTQ+ Short at the Palm Springs International ShortFest in June. Stay tuned after the screening for a talk story with refuge founder Twinkle Borge, star Malia Kamalani Soon and director Kimi Howl Lee. Find the schedule of 20 short films online. Shipwrecks and Seafaring Stories of Hawai‘i’s Past

Thursday, July 30, 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.

The ocean surrounding our Islands is filled with wonder, both natural and man-made, that many of us will never get to experience firsthand. Rediscover lost treasures of the deep, from World War II planes to whaling ships and more, through this virtual presentation for the Historic Hawai‘i Foundation by Hans Van Tilburg of the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration. Attendees will also be able to ask questions.

The Reset Theatre Coalition: Reset Series

Friday, July 31, 2 p.m.

We can all agree that now’s not the best time to pack into a theater elbow to elbow with strangers, but the show must go on—especially when it comes to conversations about race, privilege and injustices. Kumu Kahua Theatre joined with Conch Shell Productions and Braata Productions in New York to spotlight playwrights of color through a series of original works performed live online every Friday in July. The final episode takes place this Friday, but you can catch up on previous plays (5 to 10 minutes each) here.

Mom Made Market Hawai‘i

The Mom Made Market returns in person this weekend with 17 vendors, including Workshop 28, Prickly Pear Designs, Kira Hawai‘i and Laha‘ole Designs, spaced throughout Ward Village.
