Cyclone ‘Daye’ Triggers Heavy Rainfall in Odisha; Several Districts Flooded, Malkangiri Worst Affected

The floods started flowing over the Korukonda bridge resulting in roads being cut-off between Potteru and Kalimela. The National Highway-326 between Malkangiri to Kalimela at MV-7 also remained cut off.

Bhubaneswar: Cyclonic storm ‘Daye’ which hit Odisha coast near Gopalpur early on Friday triggered heavy rains across the state affecting people residing in the low lying areas of five districts of the state namely Malkangiri, Ganjam, Khurda, Puri and Nayagarh. Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) Bishnupada Sethi reportedly said that about 230 persons belonging to Malkangiri district were rescued and sent to relief camps, making the region the worst hit by the cyclonic storm.

While Sadar block of Malkangiri received a rainfall of 265.4 mm, Korukonda block in the district received the highest rainfall measuring 403 mm in the same period, stated reports. The districts that received over 100 mm rainfall during the same period are Mathili, Kalimela and Kudumulgumma.

Heavy rainfall disrupted the transportation in the area with water flowing over roads. The flood over the Korukonda bridge resulting in roads being cut-off between Potteru and Kalimela. The National Highway-326 between Malkangiri to Kalimela at MV-7 also remained cut off.

The highway connecting Malkangiri to Balimela road also remained cut-off, at MV-11, Korukonda and MV- 37, due to the inundation. According to sources from SRC office, the state has deployed Orissa Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) and fire service at MV-7, MV-2, Malkangiri headquarters, Janbai and Kalimela.

The sources added that the Chief Minister of Odisha Naveen Patnaik has announced a relief for 7 days at Rs 60-a-day per person and Rs 45-a- day for children below 12 in the district.

As the cyclone ‘Daye’ moved west-northwestward. it weakened into a deep depression about 65 km east-southeast of Titlagarh. Cyclone ‘Daye’ which hit the state of Odisha is likely to affect Chhattisgarh, parts of Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha. As per a weather department release, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to hit places over the north Konkan region along with parts of Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Gujarat.
