New Mexico man holds a child, three adults hostage in stand off

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Lea County Sheriff’s office deputies were engaged in a stand off Sunday, April 21, that involved four hostages.

Jared T Pendleton, 34, of Hobbs, NM, was spotted by deputies in his front yard. According to the Lea County Sheriff’s Office, Pendleton was wanted for several felony warrants.

Pendleton barricaded himself in a residence in the 2500 block of Waylon Road near Hobbs, New Mexico. A gunshot was heard by LCSO deputies and Hobbs Police officers approaching the residence.

Authorities made contact with Pendleton by telephone and found out he was holding hostages, including one child and three adults.

After a matter of hours, Pendleton agreed to release the hostages and later surrendered himself to deputies. Investigators found a stolen firearm and stolen camper trailer on the property.

Pendleton was booked into the Lea County Detention Center on four counts of kidnapping, four counts of aggravated assault of a peace officer, one count of abuse of a child, as well as other charges. Bond has not yet been set.

Pendleton is also being held on a US Marshal service detainer for a federal probation violation.
