One year after deadly shooting at an Olathe bar, walk planned to honor victim

The suspect remains behind bars charged with murder, and a hate crime.

One year ago Thursday, a gunman opened fire at Austin’s Bar & Grill in Olathe. The widow of the man killed says she is moving forward with a mission. “The day we lost Srinu, having the comfort of my family and their love helps me in overcoming the dark day,” said Sunayana Dumala in a statement posted online. She’s in India for this tough anniversary, but is remembering the awful events from one year ago in Olathe. Her husband, Srinivas Kuchibhotla, and his friend were both attacked by a man who had been kicked out of Austin’s earlier in the event. That attacker allegedly told the natives of India to get out of his country. Adam Purinton, 52, is now charged with a hate crime, and murder. “We wanted to condemn what happened, but we also wanted to show our support for Sunayana,” said Sarah Lacy. She works with Dumala at In Touch Solutions. Concerned co-workers developed the ‘Forever Welcome’ facebook initiative with Dumala to foster understanding, and highlight the contribution of immigrants. “She’s all hands on deck,” said Lacy. “Her heart is so into this. She’s amazing. She’s one of the strongest women I’ve ever met. And she’s so positive.” Dumala is also organizing a march for her husband’s birthday on March 9th. That march will start at Garmin where Kuchibhotla worked, proceed to Austin’s a couple miles away for a flower laying ceremony, and then return to Garmin. The public is encouraged to attend. “I hope to see you all join me in the walk, and spread the message of love, unity, and tolerance,” said Dumala.
