Three police officers were shot, one fatally, Tuesday night as they responded to a 911 call at a Clinton home.Henry County authorities said they received an open call for help at 9:20 p.m. in the 300 block of Grandriver Street. Investigators said dispatchers heard a woman screaming in the background.The Missouri State Highway Patrol said the officers were then dispatched to a house not involved in that disturbance call. They are looking into why officers were dispatched to a second location.When officers arrived at the house, investigators said the suspect, identified as James E. Waters, 37, of Clinton, began firing at them. The officers made their way into the home, trying to reach the woman they believed was in distress inside. All three officers were shot inside the home.The Missouri Highway Patrol has identified the officer killed in the line of duty as Christopher Ryan Morton, 30. KMBC's Matt Evans reported that Morton was an Army veteran, who had been deployed twice, serving as a bridge crew member and radio communications manager in Afghanistan. The Kansas City Royals honored him for his service in 2014.The other two officers were taken to hospitals. Officer Nicholas Kasper suffered a minor gunshot injury and was later treated and released. Officer Nathan Bettencourt is recovering from gunshot wounds and surgery at a Kansas City hospital. One woman was taken into custody on the scene for an unrelated issue. Tammy Widger was charged with possession of methamphetamine with intention to distribute. She is being held on $25,000 bond.Authorities said the two wounded officers were able to get out of that house under their own power. But Morton was not able to get out on his own. The Bates County's CERT team pulled Morton out when they arrived at the scene.The Highway Patrol's SWAT team entered the home just after midnight, investigators said Waters was found dead from gunshot wounds. The Missouri State Highway Patrol is waiting for an autopsy to determine if Waters was killed by the officers, or of he died as the result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The investigation continues.At the time of the shooting, Waters was also wanted in for questioning in connection with a rape case. He had not been charged in that case. He was also out on bond for a weapons charge out of Harrisonville, Mo. The shooting is seven months to the day since Clinton police Officer Gary Michael was shot and killed in the line of duty. Prosecutors plan to pursue the death penalty against the man charged with killing Michael.
