Jobless rate

Columbia County's unemployment rate for April (not seasonally adjusted) was recorded at 9.5 percent, up from 5.7 percent in March, according a preliminary county by county report released by the Arkansas Division of Workforce Services.

April’s unemployment figures are the first to reflect the impact of the COVID-19 virus and related layoffs and shutdowns on employment at the county level.

According to the report for April, Columbia County had a labor force of 8,983 individuals with 8,131 employed and 852 unemployed. This compares to March's labor force of 9,343 with 8,809 employed and 534 unemployed.

Arkansas' unemployment rate for April was 10.2 percent, up from 4.8 percent in March. According to the ADWS report, for April Arkansas had a labor force of 1,316,871 with 1,182,909 employed and 133,962 unemployed. This compares to March's labor force of 1,386,748 with 1,320,420 employed and 66,328 unemployed.

The United States unemployment rate for April was 14.7 percent, up from 4.4 percent in March. According to the report, for April the U.S. labor force was 156,481,000 with 133,403,000 employed and 23,078,000 unemployed. This compares to March's labor force of 162,913,000 with 155,772,000 employed and 7,140,000 unemployed.

Of the seven neighboring Southwest Arkansas counties surveyed, all saw an increase in the jobless rate from March to April.

Calhoun County's unemployment rate for April is at 7.4 percent, up from 6.1 percent in March.

Hempstead County's unemployment rate for April is at 8.7 percent, up from 5.2 percent in March.

Lafayette County's unemployment rate for April is at 10.4 percent, up from 6.2 percent in March.

Miller County's unemployment rate for April is at 13.8 percent, up from 5.3 percent in March.

Nevada County's unemployment rate for April is at 9.2 percent, up from 5.1 percent in March.

Ouachita County's unemployment rate for April is at 9.7 percent, up from 6.3 percent in March.

Union County's unemployment rate for April is at 11.8 percent, up from 7.2 percent in March.
