Truck driver seriously injured after crashing into building near West Virginia line

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, Va. (WHSV) — A truck driver is hospitalized with serious injuries after a crash that closed down part of Route 259 on Wednesday morning.

According to Virginia State Police, around 6:10 a.m., a 2008 Mack tractor-trailer was heading west on Route 259 when, about a mile west of Route 820, not far from the West Virginia/Virginia state line in the Bergton area, the truck crossed the center line.

Police say the truck ran off the left side of the roadway, struck a parked vehicle, then a tree, and overturned before crashing into an abandoned home, leaving a gaping hole and scattered timbers throughout the yard.

The driver of the truck, identified as 37-year-old Ralph D. Herman, of Roseland, was seriously injured in and airlifted to UVA Medical Center for treatment.

Police say Herman was wearing a seat belt and no charges have been filed at this point.

Police were assisted by the Rockingham County Fire and Rescue Department and Bergton Fire and Rescue Department.
