RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Richmond’s population is booming, increasing at twice the growth rate of the state and nation, according to population estimates released April 18 by the U.S. Census Bureau.

Since 2010, Richmond’s population has grown 12%, adding more than 24,000 people to the River City. According to the bureau, the increase is due to the birth rate as well as people moving to Richmond from out of state and from other countries.

“This is one of the most exciting cities in America right now, in my opinion,” said AJay Brewer, owner of Brewer’s Café in Manchester.

It’s part of the reason why Brewer wanted to open his cafe in the Richmond area.

“If I can provide something to my city to make it better, make it more engaging, entertaining... any way that I can make an impact on my community, I’m going to do that,” Brewer said.

Currently, Richmond ranks 44th in the nation in terms of population in a metropolitan area. The recent increase in growth is driving construction; homes and apartment buildings already in development and construction phases to accommodate the number of people relocating to the city.

"I did a lot of work around here, just building these buildings,” said Jeff Sanford. “Doing a lot of concrete work."

The Manchester area is just one of the inner cities seeing a boom in revitalization. New small businesses opening their doors while others are expected to open in the near future.

"I think that Richmond has always had an opportunity to shine and I think because of some of these other inner-city communities thriving now it will be more of a balanced playing field," Brewer said.

While the U.S. Census Bureau estimates Richmond’s population increased by 12% since 2010, it’s neighboring counties also saw increases.

Chesterfield County saw a 10.2% increase, Hanover County 7.4% and Henrico County 7.3%.

While the official census count will take place next April, locals like Brewer are excited about where Richmond goes from here.

“I think over the next 20 years we’re going to see a city we’ve always wanted to see,” Brewer said.

The bureau issues population estimates every year. Those estimates are based on a variety of sources, including surveys and tax data.
