The largest national level English debate tournament of Bangladesh, the XV BDC Pre WSDC 2018, was held at Daffodil International University in the city in September 27-29.
At least 64 teams from across the country participated in the debate tournament jointly hosted by Daffodil International University and Bangladesh Debating Council, said a press release on Sunday.
After six grueling rounds, the top 24 debating teams qualified for the knockout rounds in the open and novice categories of the tournament.
Scholastica School, Mirpur bagged the trophy in the open category defeating Rajuk School and College in a closely contested final.
In the novice championship category, another team from Scholastica School, Mirpur beat Adamjee Cantonment College in the final and took home the prize.
Kazi Fardeen Ishraq was named the debater of the tournament while Jubayer Ibn Hamid and Shafi Nur-E-Aziz, all from Scholastica won the best speaker awards in the open and novice finals respectively.
The open grand finale took place at the Daffodil International University auditorium on Saturday.
DIU board of trustees chairman Md Sabur Khan attended the grand finale and the closing ceremony as the chief guest, added the release.
Professor AMM Hamidur Rahman, dean of Faculty of Humanities and Social Science, and Professor Farhana Helal Mehtab, associate dean of the faculty, and chief advisor of XV BDC Pre WSDC 2018 were also present at the closing ceremony and distributed the prizes among the winners.
The selection committee of Bangladesh Debating Council chose the top 33 debaters from this tournament for the national camp.
The best five debaters would be selected from the national camp to form Team Bangladesh to represent the country at the World Schools Debating Championship, the world cup of school debate, in Sri Lanka in 2019.
