West Virginia Interstate Fair wraps up with livestock auctions
MINERAL WELLS — The final day of the West Virginia Interstate Fair and Exposition Saturday kicked off with a packed barn for the Junior Livestock Auction.
“I like the competition and the opportunity to learn about each species,” said Haleigh Kent, whose Feeder Steer won the title of grand champion this year.
Kent said that she has been showing for 12 years. Next year will be her last to show because she is aging out.
“I show everything but rabbits and goats,” she said.
Kent said she has loved her time with the 4-H. Her animals over the years have won different titles.
“I won a reserved champ for lambs in 2016 and last year I had a grand champ market hog,” she said.
This year Kent also won the title of master showman.
Heat prompted fair organizers to install high-powered fans to keep the animals and people cool during the auction. While the auction had a great turn out, the day hours of the carnival were slow with temperatures staying in the high 90s to low 100s.
Yet, as the afternoon turned to evening, more people ventured out to enjoy the last day of the fair.
Workers noted that they believed Saturday had been the hottest day so far.
Jayden Primm, 6, of Cairo, said that she loves attending the fair to play “hundreds of games and ride all the rides.”
Primm said that she has won multiple fish from fair games in the past years, as well as many prizes.
As the evening continued, people attended the truck and tractor pulls and listen to Appalachian Hustle and William Morgan perform.
Auction results were unavailable Saturday evening.
