The Cole County Historical Society is still selling its Christmas tree ornaments, featuring the Jefferson City Chamber of Commerce as the 33rd addition to its annual keepsake ornament collection.

Proceeds from the sale of the ornaments, which cost $20, help support the operation of the historical museum at 109 Madison St.

The 2018 ornament commemorates the 125th anniversary of the Jefferson City Chamber of Commerce and its building, located at 213 Adams St, which also has a rich heritage. According to information included with each ornament, the building was originally built as the home of Dr. and Mrs. William Clark in 1907. Dr. Clark was a well-known and respected physician and community leader, doctoring hundreds of Central Missouri residents and frequently receiving no compensation except for a bushel of sweet corn or other vegetables. He also served as the personal physician to more than eight Missouri governors.

The Missouri Baptist Convention purchased the home in 1949, extensively remodeling into the church headquarters. The ornament historical information said the building expanded to the north and a chapel was added to the eastern part. Noted for its stately white columns, the building was and is a proud downtown landmark.

The chamber purchased the building in 1976, and serves as the organizational headquarters. The chapel became the Arthur P. Grimshaw Boardroom, named after the first chairman of the board in 1893. Now known as the chamber building, it serves as a strong symbol of leadership. Celebrating its 125th year, the chamber continues to serve the Jefferson City community by working together with business and community leaders to strengthen the local economy and increase opportunities for residents, the information said.

The ornaments can be purchased at the museum office, Jefferson City Chamber of Commerce, Samuel's Tuxedos and Gifts, Carrie's Hallmark, Southbank Gift Company, Cottonstone Art Gallery, Merle Norman, Super Hair and The Schaefer House.
