A Jefferson City man has been arrested and charged after a vehicle pursuit early Saturday morning.
Sean E. Craft, 19, was charged Saturday with resisting arrest, receiving stolen property, possession of a controlled substance, driving without a valid license, failure to stop, and careless and imprudent driving, according to Cole County Circuit Court documents.
At about 3:08 a.m. Saturday morning, a Jefferson City Police Department officer observed an eastbound red Ford Explorer that failed to stop at the stop sign on West Ashley Street at Washington Street, according to a JCPD probable cause statement.
The officer activated emergency lights, but the 2004 Explorer sped up and failed to yield to the lights and siren.
The Explorer did not stop and "made several turns at a high rate of speed (on Ashley, Madison, Hickory and Jackson streets, according to a news release), failing to stop at stop signs until the defendant crashed into a concrete block barrier located at the 800 block of Adams Street."
Police said Craft got out of the Explorer and fled on foot from officers, running through an apartment complex.
Though the Explorer had hit a concrete barrier, it was still able to move. "The defendant did not properly stop his car and place it in park, thus causing it to collide with a parked vehicle located inside Heritage Apartments parking lot," according to the probable cause statement.
Officers pursued Craft on foot and apprehended him a short distance from the vehicle.
A search of the vehicle revealed "a clear bag containing 27 grams of marijuana and a 40-caliber Glock model 23 handgun in the glove compartment." The serial number on the handgun showed the gun had been stolen in Cole County.
Craft claimed ownership of the gun and marijuana, police said.
A check also showed Craft did not have a valid license.
Craft's cash-only bail was set at $25,000.
Receiving stolen property is a class D felony. Resisting arrest is a class E felony. Possession of a controlled substance and careless and imprudent driving are class A misdemeanors. Failure to stop is a class C misdemeanor. Driving without a license is a class D misdemeanor.
During the pursuit, police also received calls for shots fired in the 300 block of Hickory Street - a 20-year-old man had been shot and later died - but police said that was a separate incident. Charges including second-degree murder have been filed against another Jefferson City man arrested in that case, police said Monday.
