Anti-mosquito spraying available for Jefferson City residents with standing water from flooding

Mosquito eggs hatch in water, and that’s something Jefferson City’s Department of Planning and Protective Services will work to prevent, with standing water left behind by this year’s flooding.

“As the water recedes, we’re looking for standing pools of water, and what we’re going to do is treat standing pools of water for mosquito larvae — to prevent the insects from hatching, coming out and being biting nuisances,” said Dave Grellner, the city’s environmental health manager within Planning and Protective Services’ Environmental Health Division.

Grellner said people can call the city’s Department of Planning and Protective Services at 573-634-6410.

If residents have areas of standing water from flooding, “we’ll be glad to come out, take a look at it and treat it,” he said.

He said not many properties had been sprayed so far — difficult to do with water levels still elevated.

Some water sampling had been done Thursday, he said.
