The five young girls always laughed and had fun while they walked some 16 blocks to the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, every Sunday. Each of them full of life, faith and happiness, despite the racism they faced during that time.

One Sunday — Sept. 15, 1963 — the girls decided to skip their Sunday School classes and hang out in the lounge near the bathroom in the lower area of the church.
