The new musical The Prom will take part in the WorldPride celebration, hosted in New York City in June. Broadway cast members will take the stage at the closing ceremony, set for June 30 in Times Square.

The show is itself a celebration of queerness and identity, following a teenage lesbian couple in Indiana who become the center of a media frenzy for wanting to attend a dance together. When a group of theatre eccentrics, fresh off a Broadway flop, catch wind of the scandal, they travel to the small town to take the high schoolers under their wing and into the spotlight.

Shortly after officially opening at the Longacre Theatre in November 2018, The Prom made headlines for showcasing the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade’s first televised same-sex kiss. The musical features a spectrum of queer-themed numbers, from the ballad “Dance With You” to the facetiously earnest “The Acceptance Song” to the gospel-inspired “Love Thy Neighbor.”

The show, penned by Chad Beguelin, Bob Martin, and Matthew Sklar, has gained the attention of the entertainment industry at large, with Ryan Murphy announcing a Netflix adaptation and Penguin Random House set to publish a young adult novel based on the musical.

Also set to perform during the WorldPride Closing Ceremony are Jake Shears and Melissa Etheridge (both Broadway alums, having appeared in Kinky Boots and American Idiot, respectively).

The current Broadway company of The Prom includes Caitlin Kinnunen as Emma, with Isabelle McCalla as her girlfriend Alyssa, and Tony winner Beth Leavel as (fictional) Tony winner Dee Dee Allen, with Brooks Ashmanskas, Christopher Sieber, Josh Lamon, and Angie Schworer as her Broadway cohorts.
