PROVIDENCE, R.I. — An East Providence 19-year-old woman was injured by gunfire Wednesday evening as she rode with her boyfriend in the back seat of a car with another couple, a police official said.

Providence police Maj. David Lapatin said the vehicle carrying the two couples was pulling onto Academy Avenue from a convenience store when a shooter opened fire from Whitford Avenue at about 6:30 p.m.

Several shots were fired, Lapatin said, and one hit the teen, whom he identified as Brianna Flodin, 19, of East Providence. Her injury was not life-threatening, he said.

Her friends dropped her off at Roger Williams Medical Center, and she was then transferred to Rhode Island Hospital. Lapatin said the friends didn't stick around, so detectives were unable to talk with them and didn't have access to the vehicle.

The shooter fled east on Whitford Avenue.

Evidence indicates that a single weapon was involved, Lapatin said.

"We have some leads," Lapatin said. "We believe persons in that car were targeted."
