Player, pitcher of week

The performances of freshman shortstop Tyler Finke, left, and sophomore pitcher Joseph Hartsfield have been vital to Snead State winning eight games in a row. The ACCC recognized Finke as player of the week and Hartsfield as pitcher of the week.

The Snead State baseball team extended its winning streak to eight games by sweeping a North Division doubleheader at Marion Military Institute on Thursday.

The Parsons improved to 16-6 overall and 6-0 in the division. Longtime SSCC assistant coach Casey Underwood is serving his first season as the program’s head coach.

Snead State won Thursday’s opener 9-6, rallying from a 6-1 deficit after two innings.

The Parsons hit for the cycle, as Tyler Finke homered, Clay Stearns and Nate Sanderson each tripled, Jacob Rich doubled twice and Jy Lockridge doubled once.

Jacob Bobo and Lockridge paced Snead’s 16-hit attack. Lockridge went 3-for-3 with three runs and one RBI, and Bobo was 3-for-4 with one run and two RBIs.

Sanderson batted 2-for-2 with one run, Stearns 2-for-3 with one RBI and Rich 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI. Finke finished 2-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs.

Dylan Watkins gave up two hits in a two-inning relief stint. He struck out one.

The Parsons took the second game 5-3 as Stearns, Cooper Self, Drew Guffey, Bobo and Rich all belted a double. Guffey contributed two RBIs.

Joseph Hartsfield picked up the win on the mound. He threw six innings, yielding four walks and three hits while striking out 10.

Brooks Tolbert collected the save by pitching the final inning. He allowed three hits and a walk with one strikeout.

Parsons take two from Martin Methodist

Snead State traveled to Pulaski, Tennessee, on Monday and beat Martin Methodist College’s junior varsity 11-1 and 2-0.

Tyler Davis homered while Parker Covington, Lockridge and Tucker Bailey each doubled for the Parsons in their 10-run victory in game one.

Davis closed 2-for-2 with three runs and two RBIs, Self 2-for-2 with an RBI, Jake Brown 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBIs and Hartsfield 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Five Parson pitchers — Cooper Wood, Kade Williams, Josh Decker, Sebastian Langford and Austin Goode — combined on a one-hitter.

Wood started and got the win. He struck out four and walked three in two innings.

Snead State triumphed in game two behind a combined no-hitter from its pitching staff.

Britt Kelly, Caleb Floyd, Zach Williams and Tolbert worked together to silence Martin Methodist’s bats.

Williams earned the win, striking out one in two innings. Kelly and Floyd both worked two innings and fanned three batters.

Brown batted 2-for-3 with a run to pace Snead’s offense. Lockridge tripled and drove in two runs.

ACCC honors pair of Parsons

The Alabama Community College Conference selected Finke its player of the week and Hartsfield its pitcher of the week for their performances in games from March 10-16.

Snead State started its winning streak during that stretch by sweeping North Division rival Southern Union 5-1, 6-0, 9-8 and 13-0.

Finke, a freshman shortstop from Colombus, Indiana, batted .750 with four runs, three stolen bases and seven RBIs. He won player of the week for the second time this season.

Hartsfield, a sophomore right-hander from Birmingham, went 1-0 with nine strikeouts and one walk.
