Albertville Recreation Center

The city’s existing recreation building will be demolished to make way for a new center and amphitheater.

The Albertville City Council approved the final bid for the city’s multi-million dollar recreation complex.

The bid for $28.1 million for construction of the recreation center and amphitheater was awarded to Carmon Construction of Albertville. The bid included 13 alternates. If the city doesn’t choose to exercise any of the alternate bids, the total cost of the project would be $26.6 million

RA-LIN Associates was the low bidder for the first bid project with a $21.6 million. That project included fields and all associated structures, fencing, lighting and anything associated with field construction.

In July 2018, the city approved issuing a $25 million bond for financing public roads and municipal improvements. Up to $17.5 million of the bond could be used for infrastructure improvement around the city’s recreation complex on West McKinney Avenue.

Albertville Mayor Tracy Honea said the total cost of the recreation complex was about $58 million.

The council also amended the animal control ordinance to allow animal control officers to issue citations directing ordinance offenders to appear in court.

A group of citizens from the Leyland Drive area, which sits on the north border of the site for the recreation center, also attended the meeting. Their main concern was that a buffer area be maintained between the residential neighborhood and the complex.

Honea said John Chambless, of Chambless King Architects, had meet with the group before to address their concerns. Honea said nothing had changed in the plans for the buffer zone since they met with Chambless.

One resident also requested the landscaper for the project take a look at some of the trees on the complex property. She said some of them were dead and needed to be removed.
