SARDIS CITY — Class 3A, No. 8 Glencoe gained the momentum in the second quarter and turned it into a 44-29 win over Sardis on Thursday night in the varsity girls semifinals of the Etowah County Basketball Tournament.

The Lions hosted the tournament for the first time since 2006.

No. 2 seed Glencoe and No. 3 seed Sardis were tied 10-10 after a quarter, but the Yellow Jackets outscored the Lions 10-1 in the second period to build a 20-11 advantage at intermission.

Glencoe was in front 33-22 after three periods.

Kaitlyn Morris of Sardis scored a game-best 12 points. Aubrey Gray’s nine points topped Glencoe, which met Southside in the finals Friday night.

JV GIRLS

Sardis avenged a 28-25 loss to Hokes Bluff to open the season by posting a 42-40 triumph Thursday afternoon in the Etowah County Tournament semifinals.

Sardis (9-3) led 9-8, 24-14 and 30-26 at the rest stops.

Adelyn Ellis scored 12 and McKenzie Cullom 11 to propel the Lions’ attack.

Brittany Slaten tossed in seven, Madi Layfield six and Kim Powell and Lily Towns three each.

Halle Davenport scored 14 and Kileigh Blackwell 11 to lead Hokes Bluff.

Sardis faced No. 1 seed Southside in the finals Friday afternoon.
