LEOMINSTER — The former Kings Corner Car Wash building and its contents were heavily damaged in an early Saturday morning fire.

Firefighters were called to the scene of the Main Street building for a report of a working fire about 2:45 a.m., according to Deputy Fire Chief Gary J. Ranno.

“When the companies arrived, they had heavy fire showing from the building,” he said.

Ranno said the fire was contained to the three garage stalls of the building, which has not operated as a car wash in several years. More recently, he said, it has been used as storage for landscaping and construction equipment. He estimated there was about $300,000 worth of damage to the building and its contents.

The attached Elegante Hair & Nails salon also suffered moderate smoke damage, Ranno said.

He said it took firefighters about 45 minutes to knock the fire down, and firefighters remained on scene until about 6 a.m. Ranno said one firefighter was sent to the hospital for dehydration, was treated and released.

The fire appeared to start in one of the bays, but the cause is unknown at this time, Ranno said Saturday evening. It remains under investigation by the State Fire Marshal’s Office, he said.

Ranno said Fitchburg firefighters assisted at the scene, and Lunenburg, Sterling and Shirley covered the stations.
