NORMAN – The Oklahoma women's tennis team downed Arizona State 4-2 Saturday inside the Headington Family Tennis Center.

With the victory, OU moves to 5-1 on the season, its best start under head coach Audra Cohen.

“We competed well on every court. Even the courts where we came up just short on, I feel like we put a lot of heart out there, and that's what it takes,” said Cohen.

“There's so much parity in our sport now and every team is good. [Arizona State] did a really good job of competing and staying there and I think we beat them with our tennis at the end. That's what it was for us to get that confidence.”

The Sooners snagged the doubles point for the sixth straight match.

On court one, Ivana Corley and Jasmine Asghar fell to No. 7 Lauryn John-Baptiste and Ilze Hattingh 6-2.

Kianah Motosono and Oleksandra Korashvili got a win over Sammi Hampton and Samantha Alicea on court three to remain undefeated (5-0) on the year. The duo trailed the Sundevils 4-2 before battling back to win four straight games and earn a 6-4 victory.

No. 51 Camila Romero and Martina Capurro clinched the point for OU with a 7-5 victory over Tereza Kolarova and Savannah Slaysman on court two. Romero and Capurro trailed 4-2 but battled back to tie the match at 5-all, then won the next two games to seal the deal.

Asghar made quick work of Slaysman on court four, downing the Sundevil 6-1, 6-1 to maintain a perfect 4-0 record this season.

“It was a lot of fun. Last week I didn't feel like I played so great, so this week I wanted to come out, play my tennis and just have fun,” Asghar said.

Korashvili picked up her fourth straight win when she defeated John-Baptiste at the two spot, 6-3, 6-4.

Romero clinched the match for OU in a three-setter, holding on to beat Kolarova 6-4, 6-7 (3-7), 6-1. The Sooner won the first set handily before Kolarova fired back to force a breaker in the second. Romero dropped set two, but gave the third frame all she had to close out the contest.

When play was halted, Capurro was up 3-0. third set with Hattingh on court one. Capurro dropped the first after a tiebreaker, 7-6 (3), but won the second in another tiebreaker 7-6 (5).
