Romero Garners Big 12 Player of the Week Honors

February 12, 2019 | Women's Tennis

NORMAN – Sophomore Camila Romero of the Oklahoma women's tennis team has been named Big 12 Player of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday.

Romero was the key to OU's win over Arizona State, clinching both the doubles point and the match for the Sooners. In doubles, No. 51 Romero and her partner Martina Capurro clinched the point for OU with a 7-5 victory over Tereza Kolarova and Savannah Slaysman on court two. Romero and Capurro trailed 4-2 but battled back to tie the match at 5-all, then won the next two games to seal the deal. With their win, OU stayed undefeated in doubles points this year, claiming the opening point in all six of its matches.

Romero clinched the match for OU with a three-set victory over Tereza Kolarova at the No. 3 line. Romero cruised through set one before Kolarova answered in the second, but Romero dominated the deciding set to close out the match for the Sooners.

Romero has now clinched two matches and leads the team in singles wins with five.

This is the first career honor for Romero and OU's second Big 12 weekly award this season. Romero's accolade also marks the first time in program history that multiple Oklahoma players have garnered league honors in the same season after junior Oleksandra Korashvili was named Big 12 Player of the Week for January 29.

Romero and the Sooners are back on the court Sunday to host Texas A&M at noon CT. The contest will be broadcast on Fox Sports Oklahoma and will be a pink match for breast cancer awareness. Free pink t-shirts and coffee mugs will be available while supplies last. Admission to the Headington Family Tennis Center is always free.
