NORMAN — The No. 6 Oklahoma men's golf team sits in sole possession of fifth place after the opening round of the Puerto Rico Classic. The three-day, 54-hole tournament is taking place at the par-72, 6,902-yard River Course at Rio Mar Country Club in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico.

OU carded a 287 (-1) during Sunday's first round and is seven shots back of the lead heading into Monday's second round.

NC State leads the 15-team field after the first day of action after posting a 280 (-8), followed by Georgia in second place at 282 (-6). Georgia Tech holds third place after shooting 283 (-5), while Ohio State is in fourth, carding a 285 (-3).

Junior Garett Reband led the Sooners on day one, firing a 70 (-2) in the opening round. Reband sits in a tie for sixth place, three strokes back of the individual lead. The junior finished with five birdies in his round.

Redshirt junior Quade Cummins also finished under par for the Sooners, carding a 71 (-1) during the first round. Cummins shares 14th place after 18 holes, picking up a pair of birdies during Sunday's action.  

Senior Blaine Hale and freshman Patrick Welch are tied for 28th as both players finished with a 73 (+1).

Junior Riley Casey recorded a 75 (+3) in the first round and shares 45th place.

Monday's second round of the Puerto Rico Classic will begin at 7 a.m. CT with a shotgun start. The Sooners will be paired with Clemson and Ohio State.

Playing individually at the par-71, 6,716-yard Ocean Course, redshirt junior Thomas Johnson posted a career-low 66 (-5) to grab the opening round lead. Johnson eagled hole No. 11 and finished with five birdies during Sunday's first round.

The redshirt junior holds a two-stroke advantage going into Monday's second round over Georgia's Will Chandler and Clemson's Jacob Bridgeman.
