NORMAN – Four members of the Oklahoma men's tennis team have been named to the Academic All-Big 12 Team, the conference announced Tuesday.
Spencer Papa, Max Stewart, Stefano Tsorotiotis and Jake Van Emburgh were among the 61 men's and women's tennis student-athletes to earn league recognition for their dedication in the classroom.
Papa, Stewart and Tsorotiotis were all named to the first team while Van Emburgh garnered second team honors.
First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA while the second team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 20 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
This is the third Academic All-Big 12 accolade for Papa, who was named to the second team in 2016 and 2017 and will graduate in May with a degree in administrative leadership. The honor is the first for sophomores Stewart (business), Tsorotiotis (accounting) and Van Emburgh (business).
Additionally, four players on the Academic All-Big 12 list is the most by an OU team since 2016.
The Sooners await NCAA selection on April 29. The first two rounds of the tournament will be played May 3-5 at campus sites.
