MOUNT VERNON -- Effingham High School traveled to Mount Vernon and blanked the Rams, 4-0 in soccer competition Wednesday.

Armando Estrada and Osvaldo Angel scored two goals each. Brandon Duncan had 13 saves.

"The team ran smoothly, passing well and communicating" said EHS Coach Weston Peno. "The first half was exciting as both sides really tried moving the ball at a good pace. We each sides defense being challenged, and smart plays promoted, it was an entertaining first half.

"As the game grew to be more physical, and the pace was heightened, both teams worked hard in the second half. We found our stride, controlling the ball and making bold, fast, and effective runs. This resulted in solid goals being scored for us. Brandon Duncan, our keeper, had a phenomenal game tonight."

The junior varsity game was shortened due to heat and ended in a 1-1 tie. Macey Williamson scored the goal for the Hearts.

"The JV has come a long way this season and the group of kids work very hard," said Peno. "The matchup for JV was evenly paced and provided a solid challenge for both teams. This was a great learning experience and a lot of fun tonight. Osvaldo Angel had seven saves as keeper tonight for us."
