Nagaland Guv Ravi likely to hold crucial talks with NNPG leaders

Nagaland Guv Ravi likely to hold crucial talks with NNPG leaders

New Delhi, Oct 15 (UNI) Nagaland Governor R N Ravi, who is also the chief interlocutor between the central and militant groups for peace parleys, is likely to hold a meeting with leaders of Naga National Political Groups - NNPG - an umbrella organisation of multiple groups - here on Tuesday.
The parleys are expected to be significant as the NNPG working committee has 'expressed keenness' to ink a pact with the Modi government at the earliest.
For his part, Governor Ravi is also in a hurry to meet the deadline set by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to conclude the peace process by October end.
The centre and NNPG have made progress in peace talks and have agreed to work out a peace formula that 'enduring and an inclusive' one for peaceful co-existence, sources said.
Mr Ravi, a former intelligence official and who started off as interlocutor in 2014, was appointed as Governor of Nagaland in August and given a three-deadline by the Prime Minister.
As part of broad agreements for 'devolution for more powers' to the people, the centre may announce setting up of Legislative Council for the state and may also increase the number of Members of Parliament to Parliament.
At present, the state only has an assembly and one lawmaker each in Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha.
The central government is keen to push for more developmental projects in the state - which was granted full fledged statehood in 1963. Sources said the government is keen to safeguard the interests of all Naga tribal groups as Nagas are also a society of over a dozen tribal communities.
However, according to sources, the interaction between Mr Ravi and the National Socialist Council of Nagalim (Isak-Muivah) on Monday to break the stalemate over 'Naga flag and Constitution' could not make much headway.
The NSCN (IM) was represented by its General Secretary Thuingaleng Muivah and Chairman Q. Tuccu.
The NSCN (IM), which had begun parleys with the government way back in 1997 during the tenure of I K Gujraj as Prime Minister, has lately expressed unhappiness over the latest developments vis-a-vis the centre's keenness to arrive at an early solution with NNPG.
The NNPG had joined the peace process in November 2017.
At the directives of the Centre, Nagaland Governor Ravi will hold a crucial meeting of Naga tribal groups, influential Nagaland Baptist Church Council (NBCC) and village elders Nagaland Gaon Bura Federation (NGBF) in Kohima on October 18.
