A ‘berry’ fun season to do some berry picking at AJ’s Berry Farm

LACHINE, Mich. (WBKB) — Here’s a fun fact….if you remember. In 1994, the Guinness Book of World Records crowned Alpena for the world’s largest strawberry shortcake. It measured 45 feet long and 8 feet wide. Fast forward to now, Northeast Michigan still has a deep love for strawberries.

This weekend is one of the last weekends to pick strawberries at AJ’s Berry Farm in Lachine. There’s no guarantee they’ll last until the end of next week.

A little girl said, “We use them on our waffles and for strawberry shortcake.”

The strawberries are ripe and ready to be picked.

“They have more of a tang to them,” said AJ MacArthur. He’s the owner of the berry farm, “and a lot of people like that for jam because they’re not extra sweet.”

Alpena produces one of the last strawberry crops in Michigan, which makes this season extra sweet.

Ashley Kolnowski is your every day berry picker at AJ’s. “I think that it’s because of our soil, we’re right by the great lakes.” Cooler nights could prolong the season, but that depends on the weather.

“Berry season only lasts roughly 3 weeks, sometimes 4.”

Instead of waiting, Kolnowski said we’re better off picking them now than later.
