BRENT, AL (WBRC) - The U.S. Forest Service will be burning 1,556 acres of the Talladega National Forest today as part of a controlled burn.

According to a press release from Pamela Richey, Fire Dispatcher with the Forest Service, the controlled burn will take place six miles north of the Payne Lake Recreation Area. Smoke is expected to be seen in Duncanville, Centrevill, Pondville and Moundville.

From the U.S. Forest Service:

February 9th, 2019---- The Talladega National Forest - Oakmulgee Ranger District is planning to burn 1556.0 acres today, approximately 6 miles North of the Payne Lake Recreation Area. Forest Service Road 710 forms the North boundary, Dozer Line forms the East boundary, Hale County Road 50 forms the South boundary and Forest Service Road 706 forms the West Boundary. During today’s burn, the public will notice Forest Service fire crews and equipment. Smoke most likely will be visible from the communities of Duncanville, Centreville, Pondville and Moundville.

The wind is expected to be out of the Southeast carrying the smoke to the Northwest, passing along the southwesterly edge of Tuscaloosa. As the temperatures cool later today, the smoke may begin to settle down in the Elliotts Creek Drainage. Some settling may also occur around the general area of the burn. Signs will be posted if needed. If encountering smoke on roadways, please slow down, turn on your low-beam headlights and use caution when encountering prescribed burning operations and smoke.

Remember, a prescribed burn is a controlled fire ignited by professionally trained and experienced Forest Service personnel. A prescribed burn is carefully planned to improve the health of your national forest. If you have any questions, please contact the Talladega National Forest Fire Dispatch at 1-205-926-9765.
