No injuries after train derailment in Salisbury

SALISBURY, NC (WBTV) - A Norfolk Southern freight train was stuck on the tracks Sunday afternoon after three engines derailed.

According to the City of Salisbury and Norfolk Southern, the train included seven locomotives and 70 freight cars. Three of the engines derailed after what appeared to be a soft spot, or “wash-out,” developed beneath the track.

“Norfolk Southern is working closely with the Salisbury Fire Department, the Salisbury Police Department, as well as the Rowan County Haz-Mat Response Team to respond to this incident,” said Linda McElroy with the City of Salisbury. "Norfolk Southern has environmental experts en route to assist.

The incident happened at approximately 12:40 on Sunday afternoon near the 1100 block of W. Innes Street.

Diesel fuel began leaking from the engines while the train was stopped and an environmental company was on-site to help with cleanup.

“The leak was (diesel fuel) from one engine, and it came from an overfill, a fuel overfill,” aid Salisbury Fire Department Division Chief Jay Baker. “It was not a continuous leak.”

Officials say they have brought in specialized equipment to re-rail the derailed train and move the other trains. Crews will be working through the night.

On Monday, officials expect to begin making track repairs. The track was damaged in the derailment.

The cause of the derailment is under investigation.

Norfolk Southern officials sent thanks to the emergency responders who have been working with them Sunday, including the Salisbury fire and police departments, and Rowan-Salisbury Hazmat.
