Car flipped on its side after chain reaction crash in Monkey Junction, four hospitalized

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - A driver ran a red light causing a chain reaction accident that shut down a busy road in Wilmington for more than an hour Saturday night.

At about 6:30 p.m. the driver of white Jeep ran a red light at Piner Road. He clipped a second car, which spun out of control and hit the rear of a third car, according to Trooper Chris Lee with N.C. Highway Patrol.

The second car ended up flipping on its side, and first responders had to cut open the vehicle’s roof to rescue the people inside.

For more than an hour, crews closed down the southbound lane of Carolina Beach Road at the intersection with S. College Road in Wilmington. Traffic was redirected.

A 911 call about the accident came into New Hanover County Dispatch at 6:43 p.m. NC State Highway Patrol, EMS, fire crews, and sheriff’s deputies were sent to the scene.

There was a heavy first responder presence including six law enforcement vehicles and two fire trucks, according our reporter on scene.

Four people were taken to hospital.

The Jeep driver who ran the red light suffered from a dislocated hip. He has been charged with running a red light.

Another victim has a fractured cheek. The other two people are recovering from minor injuries.
