DESOTO COUNTY, MS (WMC) - A Mississippi police officer was hit and killed on I-55 Tuesday morning while loading a vehicle onto a tow truck on the side of the interstate.

Sergeant Joey Miller with the Mississippi Highway Patrol says the crash happened around 11 a.m. on northbound I-55 just north of Slocum Road.

Miller says Tommy McKee, of Courtland, Mississippi, was loading a disabled vehicle onto a tow truck when he was hit by a vehicle driven by Devan Simpson, of Mason, Tennessee.

Miller says McKee died as a result of the crash. Simpson was cited for failing to move over.

McKee was a police officer in Crenshaw, Mississippi, according to Crenshaw Mayor Oscar Barlow. It’s not clear if he was on duty at the time of the crash.

The incident remains under investigation.
