The trial for an alleged drunken driver began Monday in Texas, nearly two years after officials charged the former Texas State University student in the death of a man and his unborn child.Shana Elliott, 22, is charged with intoxication assault with a vehicle, a third-degree felony, and two counts of intoxication manslaughter with a vehicle, a second-degree felony.Police said Elliott was driving drunk after a day of floating on the river in San Marcos in August 2016 when she hit the vehicle Kristian Guerrero and Fabian Moreno-Guerrero were in.The couple was driving home to Bryan from San Antonio, where Moreno-Guerrero received his United States residency status. The crash occurred two days before a planned gender reveal party. Guerrero was five months pregnant.The pair was on Highway 21 in San Marcos when their vehicle was hit by Elliott's vehicle, an affidavit states.Police said Elliott admitted to drinking and was still wearing her bikini when the crash occurred. A witness at the crash scene told police they saw her roll a bottle under her vehicle. Elliott had previously been arrested on five drug charges.A year after the deadly crash, Guerrero recalled the horror of realizing what had happened. "(One) year ago today, I woke up just like any other day," Guerrero wrote on her Facebook page. "I woke up to a dream come true that turned into a nightmare I'd never wake up from."Guerrero has frequently posted memories of her husband to social media since the crash.Speaking to her deceased husband, Guerrero wrote: "No matter how many days that pass, no matter how far we go I still feel like you're going to show up as if you were coming back from a long vacation. There's so many milestones I wish I could get to share with you just to see your smile. Just to hear your voice, your little laugh. You didn't deserve this fate."
