WEBVTT REPORTER: SNAPPED PIECES OF WOOD, PART OF WHAT REMAIN, AFTER A BOX TRUCK TOOK OUT SEVERAL KNEE BRACES ON THE CORNISH BRIDGE. POLICE SAY THE TRUCK DRIVER WAS FOLLOWING HIS G.P.S. AND DID NOT NOTICE THE BRIDGE'S HEIGHT RESTRICTIONS. >> WHEN HE CAME TO THE BRIDGE, AND HE GOT TO THIS END OF THE BRIDGE, HE MOVED OVER, AND HE WIPED OUT 12 KNEE BRACES, COMPLETELY. REPORTER: THE BRIDGE HAS A POSTED CLEARANCE OF 9 FEET 2 INCHES. THE 12 F-FOOT TRUCK MOVED OVER F AN ONCOMING CAR AND THAT'S WHEN THE DAMAGE WAS DONE. >> POLICE STOPPED HIM. AND HE COULDN'T GO ANY FURTHER, BECAUSE THE BRIDGE DOWN THERE IS LOWER. REPORTER: CREWS INSPECTED IT AND CLEANED UP THE MESS. AFTER CHECKING OUT THE TRUCK FOR DAMAGE, THEY HELPED GUIDE IT BACK THROUGH TO WHERE IT ALL STARTED. POLICE ESTIMATE THE REPAIRS WILL COST THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS. AND TRANSPORTATION OFFICIALS HAVE THIS WARNING FOR DRIVERS. >> WHEN YOU SEE THE SIGN HERE THAT SAYS 9-2 AND A WEIGHT LIMIT OF 10 TONS, THOSE ACTUALLY TELL YOU DON'T DRIVE YOUR TRUCK ACROSS THE BRIDGE. A historic covered bridge spanning the Connecticut River is back open after it was damaged by a truck.The damage happened just before 9 a.m. Thursday on the Cornish-Windsor Bridge.Police say the truck driver was following his GPS and did not notice the clearance signs. It has a vertical clearance of 9 feet 2 inches and connects Cornish, New Hampshire, to Windsor, Vermont.The New Hampshire Department of Transportation was called to inspect the damage to the bridge.They said an over-sized truck took out several knee braces.Cornish police cited the driver, Nizeyimana Silas, 34,of Nashua, New Hampshire, on a charge of failure to obey traffic signals.The investigation is ongoing and more charges could be filed.Investigators said Silas was driving down the center of the bridge and avoided most of the knee braces.His box truck was 12 feet 7 inches tall.When Silas came upon an oncoming car, he moved to the right and began hitting the support trusses, according to police.Officers said multiple trusses and the bridge's facade were damaged before Silas exited the bridge in Vermont.The damaged was estimated at several thousand dollars but police did not give an exact amount.The 450-foot wooden span opened in 1866.The Cornish-Windsor Bridge is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
